Today is the first day of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence, it’s also the International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women.

Did you know that in 2021, around 45,000 women and girls worldwide were killed by their intimate partners or other family members? This means that on average, more than five women or girls are killed EVERY hour by someone in their own family.
While 56% of all female murders are committed by intimate partners or other family members only 11% of all male murders are perpetrated in the private sphere – that’s still 11% too many but women and girls have so much more to fear in their own family environment than men.
These stats are shocking and were provided UN Women, they are the driving force behind the 16 days of activism.
